U.S. President Donald Trump once again placed the Strait of Hormuz at the center of international attention after suggesting that the strategic waterway be renamed the “Trump Strait.”

The proposal was shared on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, through Truth Social, as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. Trump also repeated his claim that Washington currently controls the strait, an assertion rejected by Tehran.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the most important maritime routes for global energy trade. Historically, roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil has passed through the narrow waterway, making any disruption there highly significant for international markets.

Trump’s remarks come during a period of renewed confrontation between Washington and Tehran. U.S. forces have carried out strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, while Iran has responded with attacks against U.S.-linked targets in the region, raising concerns over a broader escalation.
